CPA, ACCA or CMA: Which Qualification to Take in Saudi Arabia
Three exams, three different jobs. CPA opens audit and US-linked reporting, ACCA travels furthest on IFRS, CMA is the shortest path to a finance role in industry. The comparison by cost, time, recognition and what SOCPA thinks of each.

The three letters after your name are the least important part of this decision. The CPA is four exams and roughly SAR 13,900. The ACCA is thirteen exams spread over three years. The CMA is two exams and can be finished in a year. They are not three difficulty settings of the same qualification; they are three different jobs, and the cheapest way to pick one is to decide what you want to be doing in 2029.
There is also a fact that reframes the whole comparison for anyone in the Kingdom: none of the three lets you sign an audit report in Saudi Arabia. That right belongs to the SOCPA Fellowship, and the only one of the three that shortens the Fellowship is the CPA.
The three side by side
| US CPA | ACCA | CMA | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awarded by | A US state board; exam by AICPA and NASBA | ACCA, UK | IMA, US |
| Exams | 4: three Core plus one Discipline | 13 across three levels, plus an ethics module | 2 parts |
| Hours per exam | 4 hours each, 16 in total | 2, 3 or 3 hours 15 minutes by level, about 37 in total | 4 hours each, 8 in total |
| Time to qualify | 12 to 18 months of exams inside a 30-month window, then experience for the licence | About three years; ACCA puts each half at 12 to 18 months | 12 to 18 months on average, inside a three-year window |
| Fees from the Gulf, first-time pass | Roughly SAR 13,900 | Roughly SAR 16,000 for all thirteen papers, less with exemptions | Roughly SAR 6,300 to 7,400 |
| Experience | For the licence, one to two years by board, usually verified by a US CPA | 36 months in a relevant role with nine performance objectives, before, during or after the exams | Two continuous years, before or within seven years after passing |
| Entry | Degree; 120 credit hours to sit in many boards, 150 or a new bachelor's-plus-experience pathway to license | No degree needed; a relevant degree earns up to nine exemptions | Bachelor's degree or a recognised professional certification |
| Language | English | English | English; confirm with IMA before assuming an Arabic sitting |
| Where sat in the Kingdom | Prometric in Riyadh, Jeddah and Khobar | Through the British Council in Riyadh, Jeddah and Khobar; some papers remote on-demand | Prometric centres in the Kingdom |
| Recent pass rates | 42.95% (FAR) to 79.53% (TCP), first half of 2026 | June 2026: FR 52%, AA 47%, SBR 47%, AAA 39% | 45% on both parts in January/February 2020, the last figure IMA published |
Two rows decide most cases: the CMA is a fifth of the ACCA's exam hours and half the CPA's cost, and the ACCA is the only one a candidate without a degree can start.
What each exam is actually testing
CPA: US content at depth
The CPA is a US licensing exam and its content is US content: US GAAP in FAR, US auditing standards in AUD, US federal tax in REG, and a Discipline of your choosing. A Gulf candidate works in IFRS and pays Zakat, so little of the tax and only part of the reporting is knowledge you will apply at work. What you get instead is depth: four-hour sections with task-based simulations, a FAR pass rate below 45%, and a credential the largest firms recognise instantly. The mechanics of sitting it from the region are in CPA Exam Requirements for International Candidates.
ACCA: IFRS-native and broad
The ACCA is built on IFRS and international auditing standards, the framework Saudi Arabia applies as endorsed by SOCPA. Its thirteen papers run from bookkeeping through reporting, audit, tax and financial management to a strategic level with a case-study exam. Breadth is the point and also the cost: even with the maximum nine exemptions for a relevant degree, the four Strategic Professional papers cannot be exempted, and their June 2026 pass rates sit between 39 and 51%.
CMA: management accounting only
The CMA does not test audit, tax or the mechanics of external reporting. Part 1 covers financial planning, performance and analytics; Part 2 covers strategic financial management. Each part is 100 multiple-choice questions in three hours followed by two case-based questions in one hour, with one rule: if you answer fewer than 50% of the multiple-choice questions correctly, you do not go on to the case-based questions. Case-based questions replaced the two essays from the September/October 2026 window on English exams everywhere except China, Taiwan and Japan, which keep the essays.
Cost, in riyals
Every figure below excludes study materials, which can cost as much again. Riyal figures for the CPA and CMA use the 3.75 peg; the ACCA charges in pounds, which float, converted here at around SAR 5.0 to the pound as of 2026.
| Qualification | What the total is made of | Approximate total |
|---|---|---|
| CPA | Credential evaluation, board application, four section fees at US$268.59, the US$390 international surcharge on each, registration, ethics exam and licence fee | SAR 13,900 |
| ACCA | Registration £89, subscription £140 a year, three Applied Knowledge papers priced by the centre (around SAR 1,300 each in the Kingdom), six Applied Skills papers at £160, SBL at £282, SBR and two options at £208, the ethics module at £83 | SAR 16,000 over three years |
| CMA | IMA membership US$295 a year, entrance fee US$300, two parts at US$545 | SAR 6,300, or about SAR 7,400 over two membership years |
The CPA number is dominated by the international surcharge, which is why a single retake costs about SAR 2,830; the full breakdown is in How Much the CPA Exam Costs From Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. The ACCA number hides the opposite risk: thirteen separate entries, each paid again on a fail, and late entry roughly doubles the fee. For scale, the full SOCPA Fellowship, six subjects, comes to roughly SAR 2,800.
The clocks
Each body runs a different expiry rule, and the rule shapes how you study more than the syllabus does. The CPA starts a 30-month clock when you pass your first section, in most boards; some still use 18. The Discipline sections are only offered in the first month of each quarter, which compresses that window further. The ACCA has no expiry on Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills passes and a seven-year limit on the Strategic Professional level once you pass your first paper there, the most forgiving of the three. The CMA gives you three years from paying the entrance fee to pass both parts; miss it and any passed part expires and the entrance fee is paid again.
Experience runs separately. The ACCA's 36 months and the CMA's two years can be accumulated before you sit anything, so a candidate with five years in a finance function has met both on the day they register. The CPA's experience is for the licence, and the harder question for a Gulf candidate is usually who can verify it.
What each opens in Saudi Arabia
CPA: Big Four audit and US-linked reporting
In the Kingdom the CPA is the credential the Big Four audit practices and the large listed groups recognise first. It fits a group reporting role at a company with US investors or a US parent, anyone who may move to a US-linked firm later, and the audit track at a large firm, where it is the international half of a pair whose local half is the Fellowship. Whether that justifies SAR 14,000 and eighteen months for your role is the question Is the US CPA Worth It in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf? takes on directly.
ACCA: the widest portability on IFRS
The ACCA travels further than either of the others across the Gulf, Africa, South Asia and the UK, and it is the most common qualification in a UAE finance department. In Saudi Arabia it is the sensible choice for a candidate who will work in IFRS every day, wants a credential recognised in Dubai and Doha as readily as in Riyadh, or lacks a degree that clears the CPA's credit-hour bar. Its relationship with SOCPA is the deepest of the three, though not in the direction candidates expect.
CMA: industry finance and FP&A
The CMA is the credential of the finance function inside a company rather than the firm auditing it. Costing, budgeting, variance analysis, capital budgeting and performance management are the daily work of an FP&A analyst, a plant controller or a finance business partner, and that is what the CMA tests. It is the shortest path to a credential by a wide margin, and the wrong one for anyone who wants audit, tax or external reporting on their business card.
What SOCPA thinks of each
Practising as an accountant in Saudi Arabia, and above all signing an audit report, requires the SOCPA Fellowship. No foreign qualification substitutes for it. What a foreign qualification can do is shorten it, and SOCPA's published exemption rule names a short list: the US CPA (AICPA), the ICAEW ACA, the Canadian CA and CPA Australia. For a CPA holder the scope is disputed between SOCPA's own pages, two subjects on the English rules page and three on the Arabic ones, and the subjects that are never exempt are the Saudi ones: Zakat and Tax, Regulations and Business Environment. The detail is in SOCPA Exemptions Explained.
ACCA and CMA are not on that list. The ACCA relationship with SOCPA is real, but it runs the other way: ACCA has accredited SOCPA's papers and exempts Fellowship holders from seven of its thirteen exams. A Saudi accountant who takes the Fellowship first is therefore six papers from the ACCA, whereas an ACCA member has no published exemption into the Fellowship and should ask SOCPA in writing before assuming one. IMA's regional pages list SOCPA among their partners, but no Fellowship exemption for CMA holders appears in SOCPA's published rule either.
So if your career is in Saudi Arabia and audit is anywhere in it, the Fellowship is not optional, and the only sequencing question is whether to take the CPA first to shorten it; that trade-off is worked through in CPA or SOCPA: Which Should You Take in Saudi Arabia?. If your career is in industry finance and you will never sign anything, the CMA's lack of an exemption is no loss.
Which to take, by goal
| Your goal | Take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Audit career in Saudi Arabia | SOCPA Fellowship, with the CPA first if you can afford it | Only the Fellowship lets you sign; only the CPA shortens it |
| Big Four audit or advisory in the Gulf, with mobility | CPA | Recognised across the firm's network and pairs with the Fellowship later |
| Financial reporting at a listed Saudi company | ACCA or CPA | ACCA matches the IFRS framework you use; CPA carries more weight with US-linked boards and investors |
| FP&A, cost, controlling or business partnering in industry | CMA | Tests the job itself, two exams, a year, under SAR 7,500 |
| No degree, or a three-year degree that will not convert to 120 hours | ACCA | The only one you can start without a degree |
| Staying in the Kingdom long term at a large firm | CPA then SOCPA | International credibility plus the local licence, with the exemption running the right way |
| Likely to leave the region | CPA or ACCA | CPA for the US and US-linked firms, ACCA for the UK, Gulf, Africa and Asia |
If two rows apply, the tie-break is time. Twelve to fifteen hours a week for eighteen months is a CPA; if you cannot promise that, the CMA now or the ACCA's expiry-free lower levels can both be built on later.
Where to start
If the answer is the CPA, the two sections that decide it are FAR and AUD, the first because it is the largest and the lowest-passed, the second because it transfers most directly to audit work in the Kingdom. Prepito's FAR course and AUD course cover the full blueprints with practice questions, timed simulations, full explanations and mistake review, in English; the CPA programme lists all six CPA course options Prepito covers.
CPA questions and written explanations are in English. Prepito’s interface is available in English and Arabic, and the AI tutor can respond in either language.
If the answer is the Fellowship, alone or after the CPA, the SOCPA Fellowship programme covers the six subjects in both languages, starting with the three no foreign credential will ever exempt you from.
